Mrs. Langlois' Classroom Expectations for 2016/17
Dear Parents:
Welcome to another school year! This newsletter has been prepared to give you an idea as to the structure and expectations I require.
Classroom Atmosphere
I believe that all children are special, worthy individuals and they learn best through the use of encouragement in a relaxed, yet structured setting. Humor will be used to create a comfortable atmosphere for the students to feel open to learn. I strongly believe that we learn through doing, therefore our classroom time will be spent as active learners, through conversations, actions, games, and many other activities.
Student Behaviour and Discipline
Students are expected to treat all schoolmates and staff with the highest degree of respect. I focus on, and reward positive behavior. Disrespectful talk and “put-downs” are not acceptable. Students who disregard classroom expectations will be disciplined through the use of natural and logical consequences. Parents will be contacted early if problems are developing.
Cell Phones
I allow cell phones in the class as there are times where the kids may use them for projects. However, they are only to be out when given permission, otherwise, misuse might result in the phone being taken away for the day. Repeat offenders might lose the privilege all together:(. Lost, stolen, or damaged cell phones are not my responsibility.
Homework
Homework can average 30-40 minutes/night, 5 days/week. This varies, however, from no assigned work to over one hour on occasion, for larger projects. On evenings when there is no work to catch up on, students are encouraged to read a minimum of 30 minutes.
Students will be expected to record homework assignments in their agendas/personal devices, however, in the case a student is absent, they can also check their homework assignments on my website on the Homework tab.
In Grade 7 I don't expect the parents to sign their child's agenda every night, however, I do expect open communication between parents/students/teachers, and want parents to be aware of what their child is working on. Therefore, parents please take the time to ask your child questions about their assignments, and make an effort to be an integral part of their learning!
If you want, you can check out https://curriculum.gov.bc.ca/ for the newly revised curriculum!
In the case where the student has incomplete homework assignments, a sheet will be filled out by the teacher, and by the student, and taken home for you to sign and return to school, along with the completed work. If this sheet is not returned, a phone call home might occur to inform the parent of an incomplete assignment; also if the work is also not completed, the student may be required to stay after school in CSI to finish his/her work. You will be notified either by email or phone if such is the case.
There may be extenuating circumstances or family plans that will impede completion of assignments, which will not be a problem. Please send a note to let me know so that additional time can be extended to your child.
Academic Expectations
High expectations are required of the students. Each child is to work to the best of his/her ability. Those who produce sub-standard quality will be asked to re-do assignments. Extra instruction is available outside of class time. Do encourage your child to ask for help as often as needed.
Communication
I would appreciate to hear of any concerns or comments you might have. Immediate contact is particularly important in solving difficulties. Please write a note in your child’s agenda, or you can reach me at the school at 250-870-5100 ext. 6995, or email me at [email protected]
If I am having any concerns about your child, I will most likely send an email home, or a phone call. On the contrary, I like to send random positive emails home to let you know how happy I am with your child's progress. Please also look in the agenda or the website for notes from me as well.
Grade 7 is an exciting year with lots of activities and responsibilities, and I look forward to working with you!
