Physical
Education Pursuits 8
Pursuits 8 is a more broadened approach to personal fitness and well-being, focusing on a combination of physical and emotional success by offering the students both voice and choice in differing opportunities in their healthy living. Therefore, the course schedule will be co-created as our year progresses and the students choose different paths they would like to explore.
To start off, and continuing throughout the year, we will be doing alternative activities in the areas of: walking/running/hiking, challenging our personal bests in several areas, yoga/stretching, weight training, circuit training, group fitness activities, team building activities, winter activities, weight training, etc.

- An increased self-confidence in personal fitness
- Social skills which promote teamwork, camaraderie, and empathy
- A suitable physical fitness level for the student’s active lifestyle
- Finding alternative activities to maintain a lifelong healthy lifestyle
- Rediscovering nature and the outdoors
For specific outcomes please refer to: http://www.bced.gov.bc.ca/irp/irp.htm
Course Expectations:
- Students are expected to participate to the fullest of their abilities during all classes
- Students are expected to have a change of clothing no matter what the activity is for each given class. This will range from shorts and a t-shirt, to sweat/yoga pants and a sweatshirt/jacket, and of course, a pair of athletic shoes/hikers.
- To be excused from PE requires a parent’s signed note or a Doctor’s note. Students will be given tasks they are able to do with their condition.
- If you have a specific medical condition that prevents you from participating in class at certain times, please fill in the provided medical form and return it to your teacher as soon as possible.
- Respect for all students is mandatory, especially during P.E. classes, where large differences in abilities can be present. Positive encouragement is always appreciated.
- No valuables of any kind should be left in the gym or change rooms. For safety reasons, all students will be asked to remove jewelry before P.E. class. Please leave jewelry and any other valuables, such as MP3 players and cell phones, in your locker before coming to the gym as change rooms cannot be locked and monitored at all times. Teachers are not responsible for lost or stolen jewelry, watches, clothes, etc. There are security cameras located throughout the school but they do not guarantee retrieval of stolen items.
Required Materials and Fees (if necessary):
- All students are required to wear athletic shorts, t-shirt, and athletic shoes every day for P.E.
- If we are doing an outdoor activity during cold and wet weather, it is expected students come with appropriate gear (all-weather hikers/runners or snow boots, jacket, gloves/mitts, etc.)
- For comfort, safety reasons, and dress code, athletic shorts must NOT be cut-offs or shorts with zippers or belts. T-shirts must NOT have buttons, zippers, show midriff or cleavage, or advertise violence, alcohol, or drugs.
- Athletic shoes must have non-marking soles, and, for safety reasons, laces need to be tied tightly. Skate shoes are not considered suitable foot wear and students are strongly discouraged from wearing them.
- All students must change from their classroom clothes into P.E. strip every class.
- Pursuits is an alternative to the regular PE course, therefore we might be going on field trips, attending different recreational sites, etc. where a small cost might be required. Ex. Swimming, bussing, etc.
